Beginning January 1, 2025, the EPA has phased out R-410A refrigerant for new HVAC systems and replacing it with R-454B, a more environmentally friendly option.
Why the Change Is Happening
R-454B has a much lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than R-410A, making new systems cleaner and more sustainable.
What Homeowners Need to Know
1. Your current R-410A system is still serviceable
You can continue repairing and maintaining it — parts and refrigerant will still be available.
2. R-454B systems are more efficient
New systems are designed to deliver:
Better cooling performance
Lower energy consumption
Improved humidity control (critical in Austin’s climate)
Quieter operation
3. Repair costs may increase over time
As R-410A becomes less common, refrigerant and parts may become more expensive.
4. Upgrading offers long-term value
If your system is 10–15 years old, upgrading to an R-454B unit can reduce future repair costs and improve efficiency.
